Come Back Confidently: Tips for Re-entering the Workforce

There are myriad reasons why one may require an extended leave of absence from the workforce. Whether you’ve taken on a stay-at-home parent role to focus on your growing family, or perhaps engaged in a sabbatical to reset and recharge, it can be intimidating when the time comes to return to “the grind.” Here are a few helpful tips for setting you up for success to secure a confident return.

First, be transparent about your absence. One of the easiest ways to do this is through the use of a cover letter. Yes, cover letters are somewhat of a controversial job hunt topic, and there are certainly times when they aren’t necessary. This, however, is a situation in which they can provide you with great assistance in landing an interview. Gaps on your resume will often give a recruiter or hiring manager pause, but a cover letter with a thorough explanation for the break can position you positively.

Second, get up-to-date on new facets of your field of work. This may include learning new technologies or even taking refresher courses. The labor force is constantly evolving, and you should as well. Staying current with your field-related skills will show employers that you’re committed to your work and ready to hit the ground running upon your return.

Lastly, rebuild your professional network. Maintaining your professional connections is extremely important, but sometimes life gets in the way when you’ve been “out of the game” for an extended period of time. As you prepare to reenter the workforce, reach out to those who can potentially assist you in your job search— prior colleagues, former classmates, previous supervisors— and re-cultivate those connections.

Returning to work doesn’t have to be daunting as long as you’re honest, confident, and show your worth. You got this.
