3 Types of Questions That Will Impress Your Interviewer
When prepping for an interview, it’s important to anticipate certain questions you may be asked. Hiring managers and recruiters will ask you standard questions regarding your work history and skillset, which will come as no surprise to any candidate looking to land a job. And I’m sure you’ve heard the sage advice: always have questions prepared for your interviewer. But, not all questions are created equal; some are sure to bore, while others will help you score a slot in the next round of interviews. Here are three types of questions to ask potential employers that can help you stand out among the crowd.
Zero in on company culture: More and more, employers are starting to focus on building positive company culture, as they recognize that this is an important draw for workers, particularly those belonging to younger generations. Show that you care about workplace values by asking questions such as: “How would you describe the culture of your company?” “Can you tell me about the company’s goals?” “In what direction do you see the company heading over the next 2-5 years?”
Imagine yourself in this role: Not every job is a perfect fit for every candidate, and that can be due to myriad reasons. It’s important to ask about the “ideal candidate” beyond just the standard list of qualifications outlined in a job posting. Show your interviewer that you carefully consider how you as a person may align with the position and the company: “What characteristics will make a person successful in this specific role?”
Flip the script: This tip applies specifically to interviews in which you are speaking with the person who would be your direct manager, should you land the job. This is an employee who you would spend a great deal of time with during the work day, so it’s important to get to know their management style and how you can be successful working under them. Don’t be afraid to “interview” them by asking questions like: “How would you describe your management style?” “What is your preferred method of communication with your employees?” “How do you help your employees grow in their role?”
